Luke 24:13-35 recounts the time that after Jesus had been crucified, two people were on the road to Emmaus from Jerusalem. The one, a man named Cleopas, was speaking with another person of the events that had taken place over the last three days. Suddenly another man “came up and walked along with them”.
They shared with this man what had happened over this long weekend and told of their disbelief at how Jesus had been treated. They went on and told this stranger about the two reports they had received that morning. Namely, that two women had seen a vision of angels at the tomb and they said that Jesus was no longer in the tomb, but was alive. Two of Jesus’ disciples confirmed what the woman had said.
In verse 25 Jesus says to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!” Starting with Moses, He explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning Himself.
As they approached their house, they persuaded this man to stay the night with them. When He was at the table with them, He took the bread and gave thanks. Their eyes were opened, and they recognised Him – He then disappeared from their sight.
They immediately ran back to Jerusalem and found the eleven disciples, plus others who were with them, and told of their encounter – and said in verse 34 “It is true! The Lord has risen.”
The story continues in verse 36. “While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” Their minds were opened. He reminded them about what was written, and that Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.
Jesus is the real reason for Easter.
As we celebrate with family and friends, let us remember the true meaning of Easter, namely that Jesus came and died for our sins.
If we will believe in Him, He promises to give us everlasting life!
